Nativity Finger Puppets: Christmas Craft

Preparation Time:

5-10 mins

Preparation Notes:

Download the template and print however many copies you need. You will need colouring pencils/pens/crayons, scissors and sticky tape. Consider if you need to cut any sets out before hand. You can also adapt this activity using lollipop sticks.

Sheet of paper containing a template for nativity finger puppets, with the puppets coloured in ready to be cut out.

While I've said this activity relates to Matthew 2:1-12, you could also use Luke 2:1-21 and Luke 1:26-27 to help with telling the Christmas story through this activity.

Encourage children to use their imagination and creativity as they colour in the characters. Carefully cut them out, and join the tabs together in a circle behind the character using sticky tape. The characters are now ready to sit on the fingers and act the story out!

You could also remove the tabs on the characters and attach them to lollipop sticks - the finger puppets might be a little too large for the smallest fingers, and this might be one way to adapt the activity to suit all ages and abilities.

The activity is available in both Welsh and English, which makes it ideal for bilingual church situations. Both are on separate PDFs so you can easily print however many of each you require. They are in black and white and take up one page each to try and minimise your printing costs.

If you plan to do this with a group in church, during a service or as a Sunday School activity, think carefully about the ages and abilities of your children. Some might find the cutting out a little fiddly, so be prepared to cut them out once the children have finished colouring. You could cut some out before hand, but this will make the colouring harder for the children and they might lose some pieces. You will also need to help them sellotape the tabs in place.

The instructions include suggested Bible passages to learn the Nativity story and suggestions on how to use the activity and adapt according to your group.
