One of the most valuable things we can encourage children to do as we teach them about Jesus is to memorise Bible verses. Being able to remind ourselves daily of God's promises and who we are according to Him can be a great source of comfort to us when we face difficult circumstances. They also help us to depend on God when we may be depending too much on our own abilities and not looking to Him for our daily strength.

Rolling slides showing the words of Psalm 100 verses one to two, with words gradually omitted to aid with memorising the verse.
Psalm 100 verses 1-2, a resource available for download through my website.

Learning verses from memory can also be really fun activities to do with your family, your Sunday school class, or even your whole congregation during a church service. I really enjoy thinking of creative ways to do this, and will gradually post more of these kinds of resources.

This one is a pretty straightforward one, which requires very little preparation on your part - simply download the PowerPoint I've put together and you're good to go! (Always check that the technology is working as you would expect it to!)

When trying to memorise a verse, repetition is key. I've found the most efficient way is to start off by reading the verse together out loud a few times, before moving onto the next slide, which hides some of the words.

If you're memorising the verse together as a congregation, encourage the grown ups to join in - it might be fun to pit the children against the adults at the end and see who has learnt the verse best. (We all know the children will win!)

This resource is available in English (International Children's Bible), and in Welsh (both Beibl Cymraeg Newydd Diwygiedig and Beibl.net). Please feel free to make any changes to the PowerPoint as you need for your lesson, but please don't resell the resource, or redistribute any part of it without linking back to this webpage.

What other verses have you already memorised? Why not challenge yourself to memorise your favourite verse, or a new verse each month? Once you've mastered Psalm 100, perhaps Psalm 119 will be next to follow?
