Introduction

Some of the most beautiful moments in the New Testament, in my opinion, are where God the Father's voice is heard from the heavens, declaring that he is "well pleased" with his "beloved" Son. It happens once Jesus is baptised, and we'll see it happen again when we get to the transfiguration in stocking no. 14.
In this, the sixth stocking, we see the eternal loving relationship of the Trinity displayed. Jesus is baptised, the Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove, and the Father speaks from the heavens. Father, Son, and Spirit are working in perfect harmony to accomplish our salvation. Our redemption is not an afterthought or a reluctant rescue mission, but the outflow of God’s eternal love. Once we trust in Jesus we are clothed with his righteousness, and the Father can look upon us and call us his beloved too.
Assembling your stocking

There isn't anything too complicated here. Make sure when you draw around your River Jordan template that you place the template face down - this will make sure any pencil markings don't show on the front, and the water will be the right shape to fit the foot of the stocking. Don't worry if it isn't perfect around the edge as once you blanket stitch around it, it will look fine.

I like to stitch the water in place using long spaced out stitches to give the impression of flowing water.
I then add John with his belt, and stitch some blue along the hem of his robe to make it look damp. I then add Jesus, and cover him with blue stitches to show he has been under the water.

I chose to use gold thread to outline Jesus's face and the dove, and once I've added the clouds, I use gold thread to draw rays coming from the clouds, to represent God's voice. You don't have to do this, but I wanted to emphasise the Triune relationship.
When I blanket stitch this stocking, I prefer to switch to blue when I get to the river, but this is just personal preference and you can carry on without switching colours if you would like.
